Living in the Infantry Barracks

We were originally slated for another house but when that fell through we were offered the Infantry Barracks. One thing I noticed was there was not a lot of photos of the Infantry Barracks anywhere! So, I decided to fix that and take pictures of our floor plan.

Ours has a laundry closet in the hallway. It has plenty of room for our front load washer and dryer on pedestals.

Walking around I noticed there have to be several different floor plans. Some have entrances right into your apartment. Others have one doorway with the four apartments doors inside the foyer.  Some have external fire escapes, which people will put their BBQ's on. Other have internal stairways down to the back door.

AC/Heat
Air conditioning and heat are all set up at the same time of the year. Apparently the residents put in a vote for when they want the AC turned on and the Heat turned on. In your unit you will have a AC/heat register in every room. Learn how to take them apart to clean them. Ours were not cleaned for who knows how long! I had maintenance show me how to do it when they did the walk through. The nice thing is you can control the temperature in each room individually.  Also, in the kitchen and bathrooms there are ceiling units. The controls to these are on the wall and self explanatory. The antique radiators you see in a lot of the rooms are just there for looks.

Storage
There is storage in the basement. Make sure you get your storage, and lock key from the housing office. It is different from your house key. It was a bit odd for me getting into our storage unit. There are what appear to be storm doors on the sides of the buildings. These big red doors open up and reveal stairs going down to a set of locked doors. Beyond those locked doors are "cages," one of which will have your apartment number on it. Each will come with a lock already on it. That way if maintenance has to get in there for some reason they can. Take a broom down with you and sweep out your area before you store anything. Also housing does have some pallets you can use to put on the floor to  keep things up off of it in the event of seepage.

Satellite TV
We were not able to get satellite TV because we are on the top floor without an exposed external stairwell. There was no place to put a dish and run the cable into the house. If you are on the bottom floor they can go through the basement.  There are other options like cable. Just call and see what will work with your particular unit. It took about a week to get the permission form back from housing allowing us to get satellite (even though it didn't work for our unit).

Garbage
You will get two trash cans. One is for recycling. Read the top of the recycling bin. They will only take certain things in the recycling.  For us bulk pickup, anything large is on Mondays. Tuesday is our trash day. You will get all of this information in your packet.
